The Krewe of Mona Lisa and MoonPie, founded in 1984 by artists Charlotte Lowry Collins and Pat Hart along with their husbands, was created to add a creative twist to Slidell’s Mardi Gras celebrations. The city’s first marching krewe treats parade-goers to a night filled with lively marching bands, whimsical homemade floats and creative costumes. They are the only parade in Slidell with flambeaux. Teaming up with the Olde Towne Slidell Association, their mission is simple: “to promote the arts, Olde Towne Slidell, and good humor.” Each sub-krewe brings its own fun interpretation of the annual theme. One of their most beloved traditions is the signature MoonPie throws—over sixty thousand MoonPies are tossed to the crowds of excited revelers each year. Every year, the Krewe of Mona Lisa and MoonPie picks a new theme and elects new royals, particularly Kings and Queens, continuing the tradition of quirky, joyful festivities. Along with the parade, the krewe celebrates with a Red Beans and Rice Ball featuring music, the crowning of new royals, and plenty of classic southern food and drinks.
Led by a procession of fully-suited knights on horseback, this krewe features a number of animated floats in its coterie, and it has developed a following with fans in Jefferson Parish. Each year 5 Golden Sheilds are given to 5 lucky adults. The adult who receives a shield gets a free ride in the parade next season. Along with a ball and pre- and post-parade parties, Mina Lisa & MoonPie offers events for members throughout the year.
